Wireless Access now available in Meadville
(Bessemer Center)!
Unlike wireless access on campus in Edinboro,
where you must log into the wireless network with your username &
password, wireless access for Meadville
requires that you register your "MAC" address with our system.
Your MAC address, also known as your hardware address or physical
address, is a series of two-character codes which uniquely identifies
your network device (Similar to this: 00-0A-F4-DB-E2-3C). If you have
a wired ethernet port on your system also, it too
will have a hardware address of its own. You must correctly provide the
hardware address for your wireless device.
On most systems with built-in wireless, your hardware address(es) will be labeled on
the bottom of the system. If you purchased an add-on wirless
card (typically PCMCIA, SecureDigital or USB), the
hardware address is almost certainly labeled on that card/device.
If the wireless address is not labeled, you will have to obtain the
information from your Operating System. Instructions for various operating
systems are below:
Windows
NT, 2000 & XP
1.
Click Start
2.
Click Run
3.
Type CMD and click OK

In the black DOS window, type IPCONFIG /ALL
You should see a section labeled Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection or similar. Beneath
this, you will see a line indicating either a Physical Address or Hardware
Address, followed by six sets of two characters, separated by hyphens. When
you are done with this information, type exit to close the black DOS window.

Linux
Obtaining the hardware/physical address on Linux
varies by the 'type' of Linux you are running. Chances are, if you are
running Linux, you know how to obtain this information. If you would like you
may submit step by step instructions for your version of Linux which we can
post here to help others, submit a Help Desk Call, and include in the description of the
call the type of Linux you are using (i.e. RedHat),
version, steps to obtaining the information, and finally, request that the
information be passed to Mr. Joe Zalik.
The Help Desk Cannot Assist You with obtaining
this information or completing configuration on personal equipment.
After completing this form,
you will be provided with instructions via campus e-mail for connecting to
the Meadville/Porreco wireless network.
